Lee Woo-seok doubles up, and South Korea's women miss recurve gold for the first time

Archery at the 2026 Asian Games wrapped on October 3 in Okazaki, with 216 archers from 30 nations shooting across eight days. The headline result belonged to Lee Woo-seok, who beat Japan's Junya Nakanishi 6–2 in the men's individual recurve final to add a second gold to the team title he'd already won — a clean sweep of both recurve events on offer to him.

The more striking result came in the women's bracket. Kumkum Mohod of India won the individual recurve final in a shoot-off against South Korea's Oh Ye-jin, who settled for silver. It marked the first time South Korea's women had failed to win recurve gold at the Asian Games — a streak that had held through multiple Olympic cycles.

India's real story at these Games was compound, not recurve: a podium sweep that previewed the event's Olympic debut two years out.

  • India — women's compound team — beat China 238–234 in the final — GOLD
  • India — men's compound team — defeated China — GOLD
  • India — mixed compound team — won a shoot-off over South Korea — GOLD
  • Kim Jong-ho (South Korea) — men's individual compound — beat Chang Cheng-wei, Chinese Taipei — GOLD
  • South Korea — men's recurve team · China — mixed recurve team — held their respective titles — GOLD

India's compound archers — Sahil Jadhav, Chikitha Taniparthi (Rao) and teammates among them — left Japan with gold in every compound team event, a result Telangana officials were quick to point out also locks in an early Olympic place: compound makes its Games debut at LA28, and Asian Games gold here counts toward that qualification pathway.

World Archery finalizes the format: 128 quota spots, a trimmed recurve field, and compound's first Olympic medal

With two years to go, the qualification picture for Los Angeles 2028 is now set. World Archery has confirmed 128 quota places — 64 men and 64 women — matching Paris 2024's total. To make room for the new event, the federation is cutting the men's and women's recurve team fields from 12 nations each down to 8.

That room goes to compound mixed team, joining the five existing recurve events for six medal events total — and, by the order of the schedule, compound mixed team is set to award the first archery medal of the LA28 Games. Qualifying rounds begin July 19, 2028, with women's individual finals on July 28.

For individual qualification, the bar is a qualifying-round score of at least 690 (men) or 670 (women) shot at a sanctioned World Archery event between September 15, 2026 and June 20, 2028 — a two-year window that is now open. With the United States claiming an automatic host berth in the compound mixed team event, ten places remain for the rest of the world to fight over.

The Para Series rolls into South America as Lima hosts the continental championships

Stage four of the Hyundai World Archery Para Series ran in Santiago, Chile, from October 13–18, slotting in after Ahmedabad and ahead of a rescheduled Dubai stage now set for early December. Santiago doubled as a qualifier for the Para Pan American Championships, underway in Lima from October 21–27 — the event running as this goes to press.

The calendar hasn't been without disruption this year: a planned Chicago stage was cancelled outright, and the Dubai leg was pushed back from its original date to December 5–11. For federations building toward LA28's Para program, Lima is the next result worth watching.

On the range: a strong year for compound bows, and a new name on the sight line

Away from the podiums, retailers are flagging 2026 as one of the better years in a while for compound bow releases, with Bear Archery singled out for its latest lineup. Separately, Bowmar Archery has introduced a new sight brand, Beast Archery, broadening a category that's been dominated by a handful of established names.
